Climbing Aragats from 1 to 7 days - Mountain tour to Armenia


Climbing mount Aragats is one of the most interesting options for lovers of mountain tourism. Since Aragats (literally the Throne of God) is a special mountain, then climbing it will be special. In most versions of the program, we will gradually gain altitude, and at each stop we will have interesting places waiting for us.

Below, in the tabs, there are different programs from 1 to 7 days, with climbing from the waterfall and from lake Kari. You can choose a ready-made program, or we can develop a program completely for you.

Climbing Aragats for 1 day (southern and western peaks without backpacks)

Early in the morning, we’ll meet you at the airport or in the hotel, and will immediately drive to Aragats foothill, to Lake Kari at an altitude of 3200m.
Right next to Kari, there is a Vishapaqar- a monument, which thousands of years ago ancient Armenians put next to the water sources.
From here, we are going to start climbing to the southern peak. This is the lowest peak of 4 peaks- 3888m. Getting to the first peak, we'll admire the view of the huge crater with another rising peak. We'll also enjoy the views opening to Ararat, Geghamian range, and probably to Lake Sevan.
Then, along the saddle connecting the southern peak with the western one, we'll climb 4015m high- to the western peak. It's surprising, how different views and feelings can be, just being t a couple of hundred meters higher. Besides, western views are one of the most interesting ones.
Descending back to the saddle, we will go to Lake Kari. Perhaps on our way to Yerevan, we’ll visit the fortress of Amberd.

On the first day, we'll meet you at the airport or in the hotel (or a better tour organization and acclimatization, it is desirable to arrive by an early morning flight or a day earlier) and immediately drive to Aragats foothill, to the mountain village.

On this day, we will hike without backpacks to the waterfall that is situated on the slope of Aragats at an altitude of 3020 m. On our way, we will find wonderful views of both the peaks of Aragats and other mountains.

This day, our backpacks will be taken to the camping ground by a SUV.

Climbing to the crater of Aragats

On this day, after a morning swim in the amazing waterfall that originates in the crater of Aragats, on its fascinating and picturesque way, we'll go to its sources- to the huge and colorful crater.

We take our backpacks with us(currently there's no way to transfer them).

We'll spend the night in this mysterious crater.

 

Climbing to the northern and eastern peaks

On this day, we are going to climb the highest peak of the mountain- to the northern peak the height of which is 4090m. From the crater, we'll climb to the saddle between northern and eastern peaks. And from here our climbing to the northern peak will be continued.

After getting the energy and power of Aragats, admiring the views that open to the whole central Armenia (and not only), we'll descend back to the saddle and climb to the eastern peak- the height of which is 3918m. New views to the crater and peaks, as well as to the wonderful and mysterious mountains of the Armenian Highlands are opened from here.

For the night, we'll get back to our camping ground.

In the morning, after having our breakfast and drinking herbal tea that is grown exactly here, we will pack our tents and climb the saddle between southern and western peaks.

From here, step by step, we'll hike. At first to the western peak with 4015m height(climbing without backpacks). From here opens one of the best views. Then, we'll climb to the most accessible, southern peak with 3888m height.

Once looking around the dreamlike crater of Aragats with peaks rising above it for the last time, we'll say goodbye to it and go down to Lake Kari, located at an altitude of 3200m, which is sheltered next to the department of cosmic ray astrophysical observatory. We'll put up our tents not so far from the lake. (On this and following 2 days, there's an opportunity to stay in a guest house for an extra charge).

Hiking-descending to Amberd fortress - Farewell to Aragats

Another interesting hike is waiting for us. We will continue the descent along the slope of Mount Aragats, descending from Lake Kari to the ancient fortress of Amberd, located at an altitude of 2300 m. Both the way bringing to the fortress and its surroundings, hiding many ancient secrets, are very picturesque.

From the fortress, we will transfer to the car and return to Yerevan. On the way, we will visit another wonderful place.

Acclimatization Day

On the first day, we'll meet you at the airport or in the hotel (for a better tour organization and acclimatization, it is desirable to arrive by an early morning flight or a day earlier) and immediately drive to Aragats foothill.

On this day, we'll have an acclimatizationary hike to the megalithic fortress situated on the slope of the volcano. We will also visit a mysterious place where the ancient fortress of Amberd is located on a triangular Cape at an altitude of 2300 m. The fortress also has a medieval Church, which we will also visit.

Then, we will move higher, to the Kari lake, at an altitude of 3200 m.

Near Kari lake, there is a Vishapaqar- a monument that thousands of years ago the ancient Armenians put at the water sources. Around this place, we'll put up our tents and prepare for tomorrow's hiking.

Climbing the southern and western peaks of Aragats

In the morning, we'll start to climb the southern peak of Aragats (with backpacks). It's the lowest peak out of the 4 peaks- 3888m. The volcanic rocks of Aragats create an incredible palette of colors that are being changed with the movement of the sun.

Getting to the first peak, we'll admire the view of  the huge crater with another rising peaks. We'll also enjoy the views opening to Ararat, Geghamian range, and probably to Lake Sevan.

Then, along the saddle connecting the southern peak with the western one, we'll climb 4015m high- to the western peak. It's surprising, how different views and feelings can be, just being t a couple of hundred meters higher. Besides, western views are one of the most interesting ones.

Getting down to the saddle, we'll descend to the crater of Aragats, to which springs with different mineral saturation flow in abundance. Views to the peaks from the crater are also incomparable.

We will stop here and put up our camps for the night. Also, we'll see whether the legend about the lamp of Gregory the Illuminator which is lit every night between the peaks of Aragats is true.

 

Climbing the northern and eastern peaks

On this day we are going to climb the highest peak of the mountain- to the northern peak, the height of which is 4090m. From the crater, we'll get to the saddle of northern and eastern peaks. Exactly from here, we'll climb the northern peak.

After getting the energy and power of Aragats, admiring the views that open to the whole central Armenia(and not only), we'll descend back to the saddle and climb to the eastern peak- the height of which is 3918m. New views to the crater and peaks, as well as to the wonderful and mysterious mountains of the Armenian Highlands are opened from here. (Maybe, we will change the day of climbing the eastern peak to the following day).

For the night, we are going to get back to our campsite.

 

Descending to Aragats waterfall - Return to Yerevan

On this day, we will continue along the movement of water from the crater, and through a picturesque gorge we will go down to a beautiful waterfall at an altitude of 3000 m.

After taking a dip in the waterfall and admiring it, we will continue the descent to the mountain village, where we will get into the car and return to Yerevan

We will sleep in camps with panoramic views near the fortress (there is the possibility to sleep in a hotel).

Hiking-descending to the mysterious Tegher monastery

Acclimatization Day

On the first day, we'll meet you at the airport or in the hotel (for a better tour organization and acclimatization, it is desirable to arrive by an early morning flight or a day earlier) and immediately drive to Aragats foothill.

On this day, we'll have an acclimatizationary hike to the megalithic fortress situated on the slope of the volcano.

The night stay will be in a hotel on the mountain slope, not far from the astrophysical observatory of Byurakan.

We have an opportunity to go to the observatory at night and watch the stars through a professional telescope.

 

Hike from Amberd fortress to Lake Kari

On this day we'll continue our acquaintance with the “sights of Aragats”. This time, we are going to hike north, where on the triangular cape - at an altitude of 2300m the ancient fortress of Amberd is situated. The fortress has a medeival church, too. And we are going to visit.

Then, through mountains, along the unusual for tourists path, we'll hike to Lake Kari, that is situated at an altitude of 3200m. Along the way, panoramic and picturesque views to the peaks of Aragats, Mount Ararat and to other wonderful mountains of Armenia will be opened up.

If you wish we can get there by car to save our energy for further hiking.

We don't take our backpacks with us – we'll come back here.

After a short rest in the crater, we will ascend to the highest peak of Aragats - the Northern one, whose height is 4090 m. From the crater, we will ascend to the saddle between the Northern and Eastern peaks. From there, we will ascend to the Northern peak.

Having received the energy and strength of Aragats, admiring the views that open up to the entire Central part of Armenia, and not only, we will go back down to the waterfall, get into SUVs and drive towards Yerevan.

In programs from 3 to 7 days you need to be ready:

  • For transitions up to 10-12 hours (with stops)
  • To carry a backpack weighing up to 15 kg on your shoulders (you also need to leave space for General camping equipment and products-it is evenly distributed among all participants)
  • To install the tent yourself (if that will help)
  • For self-cooking food on a gas burner (if you do not take the option of a cook, then it is prepared by the attendant)

This is the end of our ascent to mount Aragats, but there are still many mysterious and interesting mountains in Armenia. And therefore we will wait for you back, for example, to climb mount Azhdahak.

P.S. there May be changes in the climbing program depending on weather conditions. The guide has the right to cancel any ascent or postpone it to another day in case of adverse weather conditions.

  • The season is from late June to mid-October
  • Temperature (July-October) - day to +25, at night to 0 (sometimes lower)
  • Difficulty - with the exception of the North and West vertices is easier than average

Aragats is a powerful volcano in the center of Armenia with incredible energy. Once you climb it, you will always be pulled back. Many legends and stories are associated with the mountain, and poems and songs are dedicated to it... it is no Coincidence that Aragats is one of the centers of the Armenian civilization. Aragats volcano has four peaks that form a huge crater. In programs starting from 4 days, we will climb all four peaks and of course go down to the crater.
